If a pipe burst or is leaking hard
Shut off the water. On a well system that's usually the valve at the pressure tank. On a municipal connection it's where the line enters the house or at the meter. If you can't find it, call us and we'll walk you through it on the phone. Then kill power to anything the water is reaching.
If sewage is backing up
Stop using water everywhere in the house — that includes the washing machine and dishwasher, which people forget. Every gallon you send down makes it worse. Don't put chemicals down a backed-up drain; it doesn't clear a collapsed line and it makes the job hazardous for whoever opens it up.
If you have no water at all
If you're on a well, check whether the breaker for the pump has tripped. Look at the pressure gauge on the tank if you have one. Don't keep resetting a breaker that trips again — that usually means a shorted pump or wiring, and repeated resets can make the damage worse.
If the water heater is leaking
Shut its cold supply valve at the top of the tank. Turn off the breaker on an electric heater, or set a gas or propane heater to pilot. If you smell gas, leave the building and call the gas company first.
